FANIS Celebrates Professor Richmond Aryeetey on His Recognition as a 2025 Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition
The Food and Nutrition Information System (FANIS) proudly congratulates Professor Richmond Nii Okai Aryeetey, renowned Ghanaian public health nutritionist and academic, on his election as a 2025 Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). This prestigious recognition is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated distinguished careers in the field of nutrition science through significant research, scholarship, and leadership.
Professor Aryeetey, a Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the University of Ghana, currently heads the Department of Population, Family, and Reproductive Health at the School of Public Health. His recognition by ASN not only highlights his outstanding contributions to nutrition research globally but also underscores the impactful role of African scholars in shaping international nutrition agendas.

A Legacy of Excellence in Nutrition and Public Health
Professor Aryeetey’s academic journey began at Accra Academy, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science and a Master of Public Health from the University of Ghana. He later earned his Ph.D. in Human Nutritional Sciences from Iowa State University in the United States.
With over two decades of experience, he has served in various leadership roles, including:
- Head of the Department of Biostatistics (2010–2013),
- Project Manager for multi-sectoral health and agriculture research at the University of Ghana,
- Executive Committee Member of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement,
- Co-Chair of the WHO Global Guidelines Development Committee on Complementary Feeding,
- And Co-Chair of Ghana’s Food-Based Dietary Guidelines Task Team.
In 2022, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, affirming his national influence.
His research portfolio spans over 130 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, focusing on infant and young child feeding, community-based nutrition interventions, food and nutrition security, and ecological determinants of non-communicable diseases. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Sheffield and a fellow of the African Nutrition Leadership Programme, Yale Global Health Leadership Institute, and Brown University’s International Advanced Research Institute.
